  Food Sensitivity
  Mohammed Razik H.D., D.H.M.S., M.D. (Europe)

Most of us are aware of what a food allergy is and how it presents, some might have experienced it first hand or seen someone with an allergic reaction to food, it’s never a pretty sight and I am sure no one wants to go through that experience, therefore it’s only natural that we eliminate those foods entirely from our diet. But what about the foods that we eat and still react to without knowing?

Are there different types of food allergies that can cause different symptoms and problems to our health?

Yes, and unlike allergic reactions they present in a form of sensitivity, a (Food Sensitivity) to be precise.

What is a Food Sensitivity?

The pathway is generally the same, exposure to the allergen, in this case the food, is the first step in causing a reaction, however the immunoglobulin involved is not the same as in an allergic reaction. Here we are dealing with and IgG mediated reaction (delayed) as apposed to an IgE one which is (immediate)
These delayed reactions to food are not easily recognized due to the delayed nature, hence the offending food can easily go unnoticed as the onset of symptoms might take hours or even days to develop and persist.Symptoms on the other hand tend to be low-grade and more chronic; here are some:

Fatigue, malaise, migraines and headaches, difficulty concentrating, mental fogginess, food cravings, bloating, gas and food addictions

In addition to these symptoms, persistent ingestion of these foods can cause more chronic issues which might involve other systems such as:

Digestive: IBS, Celiac Disease, Oral Allergy Syndrome and Peptic Disease
Dermatological: Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Urticaria and Eczema.
Respiratory: Asthma, Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis and Rhinitis.
Cognitive and Psychological: ADHD, Autism, Schizophrenia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Migraines.
Muscle and Joints: Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

How can you find out your food sensitivities?

A simple test allows us to determine which foods one reacts to in a delayed manner, a specific ELISA method of testing given that the patient is on a regular diet allows us to see the level of reaction to more than 90 foods and there families.
By simply collecting a few drops of blood from a finger prick and having that examined for antibodies, a patient specific report is obtained and a tailored diet is given according to the results.

What’s the next step?

After collection, the reporting process takes approximately 3 weeks and the patient receives a tailored rotation diet, eliminating the highly reactive foods and rotating the other foods in order to minimize exposure to them even if the level of reactivity is low, some foods have no restrictions upon them and the patient may eat them freely.
With the elimination of those offending foods, the intestinal tract is allowed to regenerate and the lining of the intestinal mucosa then heals, which significantly reduces ones reaction to the same foods in the future.

Are any other tests available using the same method?

Yes, one can also test for inhalant allergies, spices and herbs.
There is also a specific vegetarian panel.

At the end of the day, the old saying “You are what you eat” is absolutely true and accurate, so find out how you are reacting to the foods you eat, you owe that to yourself.
